Teach Kids to Organize!
TEN EASY STEPS TO GET STARTED
How can you be more organized and teach your children to be organized?
Easy! Take a deep breath. It's not as hard as you think. When you need help, you'll find all your tips, advice and how-to info right here at Organize Right Now.
1. Know that your child can be organized. It's exciting to think about and it is really true. Your child can become responsible for their own space, belongings and time - with your help and encouragement. If you expect them to do it, show them how and have confidence in them, it will happen.
2. Have realistic expectations. Yes, your child can learn to be organized but make sure that your expectations are appropriate for their age and ability. On the other hand, don't wait until your child is nearly-grown to have expections that they become responsible. Start when your child is a toddler by demonstrating how to put things away and being excited when they can do it.
3. Limit your goal to one. Work on only one thing at a time. It might be getting out the door on time, a neater closet or not forgetting to do their chores. The point is to choose one project at a time.
4. Make a written list. Write down all the things you wish were more organized in your child's life - and your own. Choose a priority. Make that your first goal.
5. Remember to teach organizing. Teaching organizing isn't demanding that they "clean their room." It is working with them on a project so that they learn from you how to do things and what your expectations are going to be.
5. Discuss the project with your child. Don't ever spring it on them. The more they participate, the more they will be invested in organizing the space.
6. Listen to their ideas. Try to utilize any ideas that you can. The more they come up with workable solutions, the more confidence they will develop in their ability to problem solve.
7. Break it down. Don't overwhelm your child by long days of clutter clearing or organizing. Break the job into manageable tasks. Several shorter organizing sessions, followed by some play time, are best.
8. Don't do it for them. Remember, always work with them not doing it for them. All they learn when you clean and organize for them is if they wait long enough, someone else will clean it up.
9. Make it happy. Have a good attitude. Turn on some music. Build in breaks. Plan for a fun time following your organizing.
10. Focus and finish. As much as you can see a dozen things that need your attention, focus and finish the chosen project before starting another.
